How to Get Panama Residency - 5-Step Process
Panama has three paths to residency, and you need to pick the program that works best for you and start gathering your documents from your home country.
Regardless of your visa, you'll usually need these documents:

Your lawyer will be your main guide and representative. The attorney will:

You need to be physically in Panama to submit your application. During this visit, you will:
Your lawyer will schedule everything for you.

After submission, you'll get a temporary residency card. This lets you stay legally in Panama while your application is processed.

Once approved, you receive a permanent residency card. The timeline depends on your visa: Friendly Nations Visa usually requires two years of temporary residency before you can get permanent status, while Qualified Investor Visa often grants permanent residency much faster, sometimes in as little as one month. After this, you can apply for a Panamanian ID card (Cédula). For many residency programs, you only need to visit Panama for a minimum of 24 hours every two years to maintain your permanent status.

Panama allows you to include your family, but there are limits. Children usually must be under 18 or full-time students. Parents or grandparents must depend on you financially. Other family members cannot be included.
Residency is only the first step toward citizenship. To become a Panamanian citizen, you must know basic Spanish and understand local laws and civics. This may be challenging if you don't speak Spanish or have limited knowledge of Panama.
Permanent residents get many benefits, but visa-free travel comes only after you become a Panamanian citizen. Until then, you will need to follow the visa rules of your own country, which may limit travel compared to a passport holder.
